New project kicked off. In the morning class, I was expected to make a proposal for the Unit 7, in which I took down the initial concept and what it would be like, and how outcome should be react both to the audience and to Fashion Communication.
In the afternoon, I attended the conference where four artist, graduated from UAL, talked about their experiments through their works and how they work on their works as a professional creator. they have own style towards research, process, and evaluation, and It was a good chance to re-consider of my own style and improvement to be done for future works.
I was drawing up Section 2 in my proposal. this project lasts for 10 weeks which is the most longest work i have ever done. therefore I need to work on Unit 7 more profoundly, I mean I was given a good plenty of time to spent on this project and it is essential to consider, research ,analysis ,and develop constantly. A final outcome should be whatever, so I decided to something like fine art, which would be meaningful and progressive. at a first point, I researched for a useful practitioner and found an artistic movement called Neo-plasticism, which was risen under Piet Mondrian, and He is well known for his work "composition". It is the fact that getting some inspiration form his works directly would be quite ordinary. I began to read some books relating to that movement. At the same some I researched for contemporary abstract-art artist.
today was the deadline for submitting my complete proposal. mine was turned down completely by Tim. I was thinking of re-starting, but i ended up carrying on as I planed for the time being. Then I listed up what I need to do next.
1, To understand that process that how I could turn something concrete into abstract in MY OWN WAY.
2, To research for relevant artists more
3, To image how an outcome won't lack of Fashion and Communication
4, To think of styling, location, and casting
5, To make time schedule
anyway, I decided to read through books as many as i can next week.
I researched for some stylists and photographers who are getting popular in Fashion industry in London. Who and whose work is progressive and in date. As reference, I looked over some issues of TANK, in which I found some significant artists. In addition, I began to read "Ways of Seeing" written by John Berger, for the aim is to explore how people see art with their eyes and how they perceive art as a whole.
I got enormous experience today, I worked professional photo shooting as an assistant stylist. I felt myself that intense atmosphere. it was organised under a sophisticated hair make-up artist, Teiji Utsumi, and the aim was to make some photography for his portfolio. the theme was fixed as a whole, and then for that concept, a stylist had prepared for some looks would go well with each model. depending on a direction, we are obliged to re-consider of a different styling or add some further idea. every single moment was memorable for me. I have leant how a photo-shooting gets proceeded and how they all always communicate with each other to enhance the quality or sometimes to compromise for moving on by deadline. It is essential to finish a project by the deadline, even for professional artists.
I went outside for research today, So i visited Newport Street Gallery and Saatchi Gallery because I had wanted to go these two places. A exhibition featuring John Hoyland is placed at Newport Street gallery and his paintings would useful for my project in that his works are constituted of a composition of plain shapes and colours with which I want to express my idea through Unit7. In terms of Saatchi Galley,
Ive been struggling to organise ideas based on based on my proposal. Although I expected to some extent, the main theme is getting obscure, as I continue to work on research or development. Fundamentally I got confused at what I aim to do through the Unit 7. according to the proposal I stated, I have been researching in wider range and considering of what is a root of abstract arts such as progress, experiment, and so on. I started to wonder as an outcome something abstract would be interesting or not. Nevertheless, it is the fact that im curious to see or make abstract (Honestly I might admire that kind of arts for some reasons).
A time schedule does not work at least for me. I realised that possibly i would be useless for those who are moody, restless people to make a plan and
Whole day today, I concentrated on colour composition and colour scheme. In my opinion, these processes have great things to do with abstract arts. through a research week, I have learnt that mostly abstract arts are produced based on accurate intention and process. thus today, I tried to combine composition of colours with fashion photography. Then I picked up one abstract artist: Josef Albears, I had researched for last week. He succeeded in embodying colour scheme into a series of his paintings, Homepage to square. So I made some collages focusing on his visual theory. The outcome, however, is inspired by his works directly and lacking of my uniqueness. Therefore I realised that I have to consider of how I could maintain my own uniqueness on my outcome.
Ive been sticking to colour composition and colour scheme in abstract arts, then I tried to discover how to put vivid and strong colour on photography, As a method, it is much easier to use Photoshop to fix hue though, I have learnt that putting a colour film on lighting could express COLOURS in a primitive way.
I approached in a different way today. As a decided way of photo shooting, I am going to put a colour film on lighting to put a a basic colour on photography. Thus, I attempted to put colours with paintings with photography itself. focusing on hight and low light of photography, I worked on experiment today. moreover, I got Josef Albears's theory (as you can see a series of his works: Homage to the square) apply to today's work. In terms of a way to turn into abstraction, process was not so fixed that I just relied on my sense of painting.
A brand new thinking.
In the morning, I observed that sunlight stroke through the blinder and the light reflected on the wall as if the dots connected (below image). As time goes by, that is to say, As the sun moves around, the reflection transforms and disappeared in the end.
I found out that light is said to be something abstract. it can transform every single time and does not exist at the same point when it comes only to sunlight.
Therefore I considered if i could use sunlight as am element for the project. This consideration is a kind of experiment, so I have to discover an approach.
I had a progress tutorial today. I realised that its absolutely lacking in quantity of work such as research, experiment, and drawings. As Mark give me some advice, I need to switch to a different concept. However, I ended up sticking to my initial proposal for the time being even till I lost my enthusiasm totally. Thus I got back to the start point and looked for another element witch would be interesting.
I began to prepare for shooting today. basically I meant to take pictures which is distorted or twisted in a way, then I just started to consider of how to make photographs transform in shape without using photoshop. thinking of refraction of water or reflection on water, i came up with an idea that putting transparent material such as gel and ice between lenses and object could make it.
discovery of effective way to spot a tiny space with lighting equipments today.
using the shooting studio, I attempted to find out techniques for lighting, basically I just wanted to put highlight on a tiny space like only eyes or only outlines of face, then I checked out the way to use flashlight, reflector and so on. In the afternoon, I got started to take some pictures, and to retouch them. i realised that dodge tool on photoshop is really effective to concentrate on more highlight on subject, took down some editing techniques about photoshop on sketchbook.
looking at my works I had done, i realised that moving image would be more interesting. Thus I sketched some ideas, and saw how it would be like. as one idea, I will make a short film which focuses on the motion of light and shadow. a model on the film would shade into black gradually, at the end it would be totally black and become silent.
testing shooting day
as my tutor suggested, I intended to make moving images today. So based on my idea i came up with on last week. through today, I tried to consider of how successfully I could make a series of photographs with flashlight. basically my aim is to continue to learn the way to use light, and then I have learnt to set up a studio depending on a scene and adjust light equipment as well. as a whole, i am happy with my experimental outcome today.
based on pictures i took yesterday, I got started to retouch them.
i went to explore Tate Modern today, as you see, the displays change regularly, and so do the exhibition. among all of the work, I picked up some works which interest me so much. Lorna Simpson's works are just simple, but attractive enough to catch the audiences eyes especially the way to exhibit. yo8u cant see difference between each image, but she uses text skilfully, which makes the work amazing. So, I reconsidered that it needs text or any else context.
finally i managed to ask someone who i had wanted to use as a model to accept my offer! then for the shooting on this thursday, I got started to prepare, at he first point, I thought over the stylings. basically i intended to use one model and one styling, so it needed some garments to go well with her. through this project, I want to express chaos in silence, and pictures themselves are focused on light and shadow, therefore in terms of styling, Im curious to explore a different approach that i have never taken before.
further discovery day.
originally I would show a series of photography on a final exhibition, however, i changed my mind and I was determined to make a short film like for 20 seconds. so I considered of each scene cut and take down each capture roughly on sketchbook. there is not enough time to spare for considerations, so I move on quickly.
finally it would be the last shooting day before easter holidays. at the same time, a couple days ago, i was determined to make a relevant short film. at the starting point, i clarified the concept towards a film due to make sense to an actor/actress. Basically I chose the word "Silence" for the unit 7 project, Then I started to take down brain-storming on sketchbook, then drew up capture images. there is a limit to spare enough time to take a film, then I simplified the chief theme. once i began shooting, I got panicked a bit because it didnt work better than i had expected. So i realised that I must stay calm whatever happens to let models focus on pretend as models.
through this one year, i reckoned that I had had lots experience on editing software like Premier, Photoshop, and so on, so finally I can feel it is much easier to manipulate those techniques. However, i discovered that there would be long way before mastering them. Anyways, Looking through many fashion films on web, and Ive gotten lots tips for further professional works.
following yesterday, I continued to edit a film and pictures.
my aim is to edit images for relating to the film work. Im thinking of exhibit both the moving image and some photography, so they both should be coherent and relevant to each other. Then I paid attention to each colour theme, strength of contrast, and concept to go well with each other. At the same time, I began to tidy up my sketchbook and put some comment or experience on it.
Im done with first experimental outsome. In terms of the short film, the duration is not good enough, so i think it has to add some more scenes between each capture. moving image of a traditional architecture or something fragile could enhance this film. then i reconsider of the film theme and noted some additional ideas on sketchbook. i also researched for fashion films which interests me, and tired to understand how they flow
I organised layout and size to prepare for the exhibition. it is really important to think about not only the worth of works, but also the way to exhibit. it might be limited to use space for each person, and the works are shown besides each other's works. Then I want to focus on the way to exhibit as well.
the other day, i had a visit to tate modern for the first time in a while, then I bumped into a art work by Lorna Simpson, who shows a series of similar pictures in balck and white with no gap in a row. at fist sight, it is distinctive enough to attract the audiences, i think.
Im determined to take some moving image which would be relevant to the film when im on the trip to Fez, Morroco. Ideally Im going to take some ones. still now, I would focus on something quiet like a desert, a building, the sky and so on. then working on effectively, I started to do research and collect pictures on the net. anyways, absolutely i need more enthusiasm. through this year, it is the last project to be done.
putout of ideas in my mind. at the start point, i made some collages on sketchbook with collected images. Then I tried to find further discovery on my idea.
I also made some adjustments on my proposal and put some more references on it as well.
i am almost done with unit 7 project, only thing i have to do is that see how my final outcome would turn out at the exhibition. anyway the new project has already kicked off, then I tired to focus on the new one. However, I find it difficult to carry on the new project because Im not literally motivated any longer. throughout this last project, I will try how I can communicate with my partners and how enhance our own ideas, and develop them towards an outcome.
at the first point, I collected some images and made a mood board based on the garment i was given. I'm in charge with moving image, so I got started to draw up some scenes on sketchbook. however…
i had an illustration class with John booth, which is relevant to new project; Preen project. At first, based on the garment i was given, I draw some illustrations. this time i tried to approach in a deferent way, and with different materials. although i made some outcome, still now i realised that I dont like my work at all. subtly because of my bad techniques on illustration, but I think they always lack in my own indivisibility which would make out my uniqueness. Then if I remain myself to be creative, it might need to explore and to find out my own way of drawings.
it has been a while to work on in a group. before we got prepared, we divided the task into pieces, then it would be effective to finish off quickly. according to an initial discussion, I'm in charged with a moving image. i took down some ideas towards a film and drew up some scenes with description. i knew it somewhat, I've learnt it needs a permission to use a specific location which the government own. In addition, getting involved in a team is sometimes a bit too much for me, I need to compromise, respect with each own ideas, and support my partners if they want me to.
im carrying on editing a short film. this time should be challenging to make it because we focused more on taking pictures. then obviously the number of moving images are not good enough to make one min short film. so it would be most challenging to finish it up. based on the concept we talked about, i reconsider of how a film would be like. in the afternoon, we had a group tutorial, where a tutor suggested we should choose a few imaged for a final outcome. then we pick up some we like, and decided to retouch them by our own, we will share later.
im still continuing to edit a film. according to the direction a tutor shows, a film would be better with more 30 sec, however im determined to make much shorter one such as a commercial. after consideration, i want the film to be one whose frames switch one by one quickly. at the same time, it is always difficult to choose a tune as background sound.
